Annotation | In recent years, social welfare has undergone a major series of shifts in policy, structure and practice. The author examines the relationship between social values, the social policies which embody values, and the organisation and practice of caring professions whose work constitutes the main elements of social welfare services. The discussion is divided into three parts, reflecting the central themes: the values which have been the foundation of social welfare as it has developed in Western countries through the twentieth century; the commodification of social welfare, which represents a major shift in values as well as in organisation and practice; and the implications of these recent changes for the future of caring professions such as nursing, the remedial therapies, and social work.
