Annotation | The multidisciplinary nature of gerontology as it has developed in the US is reflected in contributions from experts in their own fields: biology, psychology, sociology, anthropology, political science, medicine, nursing, social work, and health education. The book is arranged in five sections. Two introductory chapters are designed to stimulate a `gerontological imagination', and to consider US demographic trends. Part II examines dominant perspectives for the multidisciplinary study of ageing: biology, neurogerontology, psychology, sociology, and cross-cultural perspectives. Part III considers the role of older adults in major social institutions: intergenerational issues; work and retirement; religion; long-term care; and family caregiving. Part IV examines contemporary issues in an ageing society: ethnogerontology; economic status of older people in the US; promoting healthy ageing; elder abuse; crime; and death, dying, and the will to live. The final section discusses the development of gerontology, and whether it is a multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary field of study. (RH). |
