AnnotationThe number of older volunteer workers in the US has increased over the past 30 years, with reported benefits for both volunteers and the people they serve. This study aimed to provide an overview of the benefits of volunteering. A meta-analysis of 37 independent studies showed that older people's sense of well-being seemed to be significantly bolstered through volunteering, and that older people represented a significant adjunct resource for meeting some of the service needs of more vulnerable older people as well as other vulnerable groups, such as disabled children. On average across the studies, 85% of the clients who received services from an older volunteer scored better on dependent measures than the average person in comparison conditions did. The policy implications of such beneficial effects among older volunteers and the people they serve are discussed. (AKM).
