AnnotationThe aim of this study was to document the extent to which older caregivers of persons with dementia engage in self-help/ mutual aid activities such as groups and telephone support, and to document the extent to which non-users participate in this form of support. Caregivers aged 60 years and older were recruited from the Alzheimer's Society of Metropolitan Toronto Wandering Persons Registry, Canada. Data from telephone interviews with 84 caregivers showed that 21% of subjects used support groups and 26% of non-attenders wanted to be part of a support group. Only 8% of subjects utilised telephone support services, yet 57% of non-users wanted to use this service. Other means of support, such as use of computer networks and newsletters, are also reported.
