AnnotationThe relationship between intellectual dysfunctioning (cognitive impairment) and mortality in community-dwelling older people was examined in this Japanese study. Participants were 1383 older people living in Settsu, Osaka Prefecture. Data on general health, history of health management, psychosocial conditions, and intellectual dysfunctioning were collected by means of interview. Intellectual dysfunctioning was determined with the assessment instrument developed by the Social Survey Division of the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys (OPCS) in the United Kingdom (UK). Results showed that the Kaplan-Meier analysis indicated that the estimated survival rates for men and women decreased with a decline in intellectual function in two age groups: 65 to 74, and 75 years and older.
