Annotation | The Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) has published its consultation document on the future funding arrangements for home improvement agencies (HIAs), which proposes fundamental changes to the way central government support for HIAs is provided. These changes will be of importance to HIAs, local authorities and organisations involved in the provision of HIA services. This paper aims to summarise proposals made in the document, and the implications for Care and Repair's future work. The role the central advisory body is likely to change after the expiry of Care and Repair England's current contract in 2000. It is likely that a central advisory body would have a reduced focus on monitoring against national performance indicators; but it would have an enhanced role for promotion and development of the HIA movement, training and the co-ordination of advice on best practice.
