Annotation | The National Institute on Aging's Geriatric Program in collaboration with other extra-mural NIA areas and the US National Cancer Institute (NCI) have been looking at ways of bringing together research interests in gerontology and cancer control. Inter-institute work began in 1996 on breast cancer and prostate cancer. Other existing programme strategies concern: problems due to pathophysiology of ageing; cancer pharmacology in older patients; and aetiology of multiple tumours in older people. Recommendations for future integration of ageing and cancer research include: age related factors in development of tumours; aggressive tumour behaviour; pharmacology of ageing and cancer; effects of comorbidity, previous illness, disabilities and other conditions on the cancer course of older patients; cancer survivorship; and issues concerning access to treatment. The ageing of the population will bring about even more individuals vulnerable to cancer, so that more attention needs to be paid to the concurrent disease and disability burden of older people with diagnosed malignancies.(RH). |
