AnnotationThe apolipoprotein E e4 allele has been implicated as a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD), which has led to discussions about APOE genotyping to complement diagnosis of patients with dementia. This Finnish study examined the relationships between AD and the e4 allele cross-sectionally and longitudinally in three birth cohorts aged 75, 80, and 85 years, a total 0f 550 older persons. Results showed that at baseline, the apoE e4 allele was found in 27% of the subjects, in 24% of non-demented persons, in 51% of patients with probable or uncertain AD, and in 34% of patients with vascular dementia. The crude mortality rates of subjects with and without an e4 allele were 48% and 37%, respectively. (AKM).
