Annotation | This paper explores some of the reasons why the current older generation may feel they do not wish to be cared for by relatives. It draws distinctions between care from adult children and other younger relatives, and the care which a spouse or partner might provide. It suggests ways in which family reciprocity and caring patterns may be changing, or change in the future. The paper does not suggest that family care should be ignored or undervalued; nor that family care can never be a positive experience. However, it does seek to question why, if sole care by relatives appears relatively unpopular amongst older people, this type of provision - and how to support it - continues to dominate current thinking about future care. If a new caring system for older people is to be constructed, then it is crucial that one of the fundamental principles is that it seeks to deliver what older people say they want - and their views on all types of care, including family care, taken fully into account.
