AnnotationWhen compared with other countries, Italy has one of the largest populations aged 65 and over. Given the vulnerability of older people in long-stay hospitals and other institutional care, it is essential that the quality of their care is as high as possible. The authors' study is the first attempt to apply easy-to-measure, objective variables which may have possible implications for the quality of care and, indirectly, on the quality of life of older people in residential homes. The scale used has been shown to be valid and reliable, and has enabled the authors to assess the quality of care in an Italian region, showing a notable variability of quality both for the size of home and their provincial contexts. Moreover, the scale has enabled verification of important relationships between costs, size of home and quality of care. It has also enabled formulation of a classification of homes with regard to quality and efficiency. (RH).
