AnnotationIn January 1996, the US National Meals on Wheels Foundation (NMOWF) and the National Association of Nutrition and Aging Services Programs (NANASP) announced the formation of a Vegetarian Initiative, with a companion special interest group for those members interested in serving vegetarian meals to service users. The Initiative's aims were: to develop vegetarian menus for Meals on Wheels (MOWs); to include recipes for some of the menus and to provide tips for introducing more vegetarian foods; and to provide programmes with progressive consumer nutrition education materials for distribution to clients. The creation of a vegetarian menu set for MOWs meets the growing need for traditional vegetarian foods, and for the preference for many meals to include fewer or no animal products, fats, or cholesterol, but more dietary fibre.
