AnnotationIn this Canadian study, 152 geriatric rehabilitation patients assessed by the dietitian were found to have significant nutrition problems. Protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) was the most common diagnosis (57%). Patient outcomes of length of stay, death and discharge location were associated with the nutrition variables of: anaemia, PEM, weight loss, percent ideal body weight, level of nutritional care, swallowing assessment, feeding impairments, and poor appetite. More than two-thirds of patients met their nutritional goals during admission. Patients admitted to geriatric rehabilitation have significant nutrition problems that are associated with pertinent outcome variables. These clients can benefit from the expertise of a registered dietitian. (RH).
