Annotation | The medical care of nursing home residents is usually based on the usual, or median, life expectancy of the home's residents. In order to increase the understanding of this population, and to facilitate individualisation of their care, this US study developed a mathematical model that predicts nursing home resident survival. The study groups comprised 1145 nursing home residents. Significant, independent predictors of decreased survival were male gender, increased age, increase in summary activities of daily living (ADL) index, and impairment of cardiac, respiratory, neurological, and endocrine/metabolic systems. The interaction between gender and respiratory system impairment was significant. A sample life table of nursing home residents with different risk profiles and their associated survival estimates is presented. The study concluded that this model that predicts survival of nursing home residents can help formulate public health policies and identify appropriate residents for clinical trials. (AKM). |
