Annotation | Increasing numbers of older people with dementia are being cared for in independent sector residential and nursing homes. The authors describe the EQUAL (Enhancing quality of life for people with dementia) outreach project in Kent, which aims to help care staff improve the quality of residents' lives. Care staff may spend little or no time actually communicating with and getting to know residents or getting them involved in activities. All staff, residents and residents' relatives must become involved in the programme, if the culture of the care organisation is to change. This article outlines the project's history, the assessment process to find out and implement training and support needs, an evaluation of the project, and the lessons learned. (RH). |
