AnnotationThis statement resulted from an international consensus conference convened by the International Psychogeriatric Association (IPA) in April 1996, in an effort to establish an operational definition of the behavioural and psychological signs and symptoms of dementia. The conference recommended the following definition: `signs and symptoms of disturbed perception, thought content, mood, or behaviour that frequently occur in patients with dementia'. Participants also concluded that such symptoms present severe problems for patients, those who interact with them, also society and health services. Many of the symptoms are amenable to treatment, which also reduces suffering, the burden on families, and economic costs. Areas for further research were also identified. (RH).
