AnnotationThe Modified Mini-Mental State (3MS) Examination was chosen as the screening test for the Canadian Study of Health and Aging (CSHA) in 1994, the main objective of which was to estimate the prevalence of dementia and its subtypes. This article reports age- and education-specific reference values for the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and 3MS Examination in 7,754 subjects aged 65 and over. Those classified as cognitively impaired or demented following a clinical and neuropsychological examination were excluded. Reference values on the two tests are reported through various descriptive statistics for five age groups (65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, and 85 and over) and four education levels (4 or less, 5-8, 9-12, and 13 or more years of schooling) These values decrease with age and increase with years of schooling. Test scores are also influenced by the subject's sex and mother tongue, albeit to a lesser extent. These observations led to the development of predictive equations of the performance to be expected from a `normal' older subject, given his/her sociodemographic characteristics. (RH).
