AnnotationA feminist lifespan perspective on ageing is presented in this book, and used to examine older women's position in society, and to redefine older age from a woman's perspective. In the first section, a socio-economic profile of older women in the United States (US) is presented, focusing on women's financial status, caregiving, health issues and social lives. The second part outlines various contemporary feminist theories and the ways in which they have and have not addressed the needs of older women, including liberal and cultural feminism, multicultural and postmodern feminism, and radical and socialist feminism. In the third part, some strategies for change are outlined, including a feminist critique of present strategies for equality, a feminist lifespan perspective in ageing, and empowerment and older women. A new epistemology of women and ageing is presented in the concluding section. (AKM).
