Annotation | In May 1997, the Dementia Services Development Centre was awarded a grant from Help the Aged to produce a framework and discussion document on values and principles which should inform the provision of services for people with dementia. This report firstly provides an overview of the literature, focusing on existing service frameworks and on understanding and communicating with people with dementia. Following the literature review, a broad framework is presented within which organisations and services can develop their own criteria for specifying standards and monitoring outcomes. The framework is specifically designed to place the person with dementia at the centre. Five core values are identified: maximising personal control; enabling choice; respecting dignity; preserving continuity; and promoting equity. The report also includes comments on the framework from family carers and people with dementia. (AKM). |
