AnnotationThe two main mental health problems of later life, depression and dementia, are both common and can inflict much suffering on their victims and those around them. General practitioners (GPs) appear to be in a strategic position to carry out the assessment and management of these mental health problems, and may have a role in the prevention of some psychological disorders. The author indicates the scope of general practice to improve the diagnosis and treatment of depression, and to minimise the concomitants of dementia. (RH).
