AnnotationIn the United Kingdom (UK) there are nearly one million people who are caring for a partner, relative or friend full-time. This survey, supported by funding from Glaxo Wellcome, aimed to find out more about the lives of full-time carers. A total of 23 Princess Royal Trust Carers Centres participated in the survey and 7,000 questionnaires were distributed to a random sample of carers, of which 1,985 were returned. Findings revealed that 71% were regularly caring for 15 hours a day or more, the majority for a spouse. Many of the tasks undertaken were physically demanding, involving personal care and mobility, yet only 3% of respondents said they had been taught to lift properly. The majority of respondents thought that general practitioners (GPs) were unaware of the needs of carers. The report concludes with a number of recommendations. (AKM).
