AnnotationCombining paid work and informal care for an older relative presents challenges for caregivers. However, the experience of balancing family care with paid work is not totally negative; some people actively want to take on both roles. This article explores some of the problems involved in juggling work and family care from a variety of perspectives, focusing on the lack of support available from employers. It looks at the role of social work, and suggests that the issues faced by working carers have been neglected in the social work context. Two case studies are presented to highlight the important role of social workers in assisting carers who work. The authors conclude that there is a need for debate at public policy level as well as individualised support to carers. (AKM).
