AnnotationThe social and structural determinants of adult participation and non-participation in education, training and lifelong learning are considered. No particular lines of progression in education could be detected. However, changes in the opportunity structure and in society over time, differences between the sexes, variations between regions, and the interactions between all these, are likely to play a part in the overall pattern of take-up of education or training. It is suggested that educationalists using analysis from this paper may be able to examine the determinants of later participation in education, such as motivation. (RH).
