AnnotationThe consequences of government policy of closing 1,000 London acute hospital beds a year since 1982, the closure of some casualty departments, and other cuts in hospital expenditure are outlined. Extra resources have been spent on setting up specialist Minor Injuries Units (MIUs), whilst a declining number of casualty units cope with patients most at risk and needing extensive professional help. The NHS internal market has also accelerated the collapse in nurse training, which also endangers future service provision. The report includes statistics for London Hospital Trusts and Health Authorities. (RH).
