AnnotationTwo assumptions commonly made by governments are questioned: that women's increased employment participation will gradually remove gender differences in pension income; and that greater reliance on the private sector of pension provision can be achieved without increased poverty and social exclusion, especially for women. This background paper outlines older women's current financial position; looks at the pension prospects for women of working age; and considers what reforms could benefit older women in the future. Whatever the economic conditions or financial situation, a country's pensions system must take into account the interrelated factors affecting women's lives that keeps them at a disadvantage. (RH).
