Annotation | `Service First' aims to improve service delivery across the public sector, and is an integral part of the Better Government Initiative. This paper outlines nine principles of public service delivery: set standards of service; be open and provide full information; consult and involve; encourage access and promotion of choice; treat all fairly; put things right when they go wrong; use resources effectively; innovate and improve; and work with other providers. Reference is made to a Long-Term Care Charter, which is being drawn up, to cover all adult community care users with long-term care needs. The Better Government for Older People project (BGOP) is given as an example of encouraging organisations from across the public sector to work together to address the needs of a particular group of people. There is a list of the 28 pilot authorities. Annexes list performance information available on health and local services, and helplines and public enquiry points of government departments and agencies. (RH). |
