AnnotationHow people coped with long-term unemployment and the threat of social exclusion in Germany, Sweden and the UK was examined in research funded by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF). The countries were selected for their contrasting regimes; but there was widespread agreement that mass unemployment in Europe was a structural problem made worse by technological change. However, there was no agreement on the meaning or use of the term `social exclusion', except that exclusion from the labour market brought individual and social problems. Respondents who experienced such problems - particularly the British - felt lonely, isolated, stigmatised and lacking in self-respect. (RH).
