AnnotationThis is currently the largest research project being undertaken by the National Council of Women of Great Britain. Based on results of a questionnaire, the report explores women's expectations versus the realities of the economics of later life, by examining the attitudes and expectations of women in their twenties, thirties and forties and their planning for later life. The findings are set in the context of the experience of older women today, and of employment and social trends forecast for women retiring in the first three decades of the 21st century. The conclusions identify three distinct groupings: the financially unconscious; the financially conscious but fiscally unempowered; and the financially conscious and fiscally empowered. The majority of women in the first two groups will face severe financial difficulties in later life, unless action is taken awaken the unconscious and empower the unempowered. The report expresses concern that women with very limited resources will never be able to build up a sufficient fund to secure a pension, and will need assistance if they are not to face poverty in old age.
