AnnotationThe lecture takes place during CSV Week to commemorate the life of Edith Kahn who worked as National Organiser of CSV's Retired and Senior Volunteer Programme, RSVP. The 1998 lecture speaker believes that the NHS (National Health Service) cannot survive as a universal service, free at the point of use, without many volunteers helping to achieve that end. She outlines their present role in League of Friends activities in hospitals. More radically, she suggests that volunteers could perform other, more taxing roles: providing help to anxious patients; company for the dying; befrienders; spiritual care; childcare support; and mutual support for other volunteers. The NHS should train more volunteers, who can help NHS professionals to provide the best and most comprehensive health service. (RH).
