AnnotationThe Joint Strategy Group (JSG) on Local Authority Occupational Therapy Services reviewed progress on: maximising use of existing occupational therapy (OT) resources; reducing waiting lists; examining recruitment and retention issues; and promoting good practice. This summary also comments on the role of occupational therapists in community care; management of OT workloads; the supply and training of occupational therapists; the interface with NHS OT services; and aids and adaptations services. The JSG sought to identify `benchmarks' which would be useful to local authorities in developing their services, for which a small consultancy project was commissioned. This suggested that successful services have key characteristics of: a global and strategic approach to delivering services; involvement of OT staff at key points in the process, most importantly at referral; and an occupational therapist responsible for leadership and strategic development of the service. Department of Health (DoH) Local authority social services letter LASSL(97)27, `Local authority occupational therapy services' was enclosed with this summary report. (RH).
