AnnotationThis paper presents a multidisciplinary and holistic approach to research on the potential and needs of older people and people with disabilities, as regards research and technological development (RTD). It suggests action for future decision-support for policy-making and action at European Union (EU) level in the future. It identifies challenges facing the EU which are implicated in the quality of life of older people. Possible subjects for EU research are suggested: RTD for the assessment, restoration and enhancement of individual functions; RTD on living conditions and services; and RTD on social and environmental accessibility and support. How these activities will fit in with other EU activities such as TIDE (the Technology Initiative for Disabled and Elderly) are discussed briefly. (RH).
