AnnotationThe setting up of TIDE (technological initiative for the socioeconomic integration of the disabled and elderly) by the Commission of the European Communities in 1991 is examined. The first 21 research projects are described, highlighting their accomplishments, suggesting ways in which improvements might be made, and pointing the way towards future developments and potential research projects. The pilot projects are grouped into five clusters according to the type of application and the types of technology used: general models and tools; manipulation and control; personal communications; safety and daily support; and access to information.
