Annotation | In this study of the characteristics of the currently divorced and who divorces, data is used from a large national cross-sectional survey, the Family Resources Survey (FRS); and two longitudinal studies, the British Household Panel Survey (BHPS) and the National Child Development Study (NCDS). The BHPS covers men and women of all ages, and has information on both partners prior to the separation, which permits the prospective examination of partnerships prior to and subsequent to their breaking up. The NCDS, a longitudinal study of those born in 1958 allows examination of childhood and adolescent factors that may be associated with partnership breakdown in adulthood. Unemployment, reliance on state benefit and disability featured as characteristics of the currently divorced in the FRS. These factors, though, are not necessarily exclusively associated with divorce, of which the authors were able to identify only a few. Those who embark on partnerships an early age, cohabitants, those who have experienced parental divorce, and those who are economically, somatically and emotional vulnerable had higher risks. Beyond these factors, there was little else to distinguish between those who divorce and those who do not. (RH). |
