AnnotationOften described in alarmist terms, the ageing of the population is a demographic phenomenon, a social problem and a policy issue. This book provides a broad overview of issues related to population ageing and ageing policy, focusing mainly on Australia but drawing on experiences in other countries. The first part looks at common issues in ageing policy worldwide, and Australia's policy response to those issues: growing demand for services; de-institutionalisation; targeting and rationing of health and social care services; regulation, quality and outcomes; rights and independence of older people; the feminisation of ageing; and the construction of dependency. The second part focuses in more detail on Australian policy in the following areas: residential and nursing home care; home care; needs of older women; regulating nursing homes, hostels and home care; and implementing user rights strategies. The final part explores the above issues at a more conceptual level, examining both their theoretical implications and practical consequences. (AKM).
