AnnotationAustralia, like other industrialised countries, is facing the challenge of a steadily ageing population. This book aims to analyse the major themes in the area of ageing and social policy both in an Australian context and from an international comparative perspective. Following the introduction, the book is divided into four parts. Part two explores the major features of population ageing in Australia, including changes in age structure and dependency in terms of fertility and mortality patterns, the role of immigration, and changes in the health of the population. Part three looks at aspects of growing diversity among the ageing population, which pose challenges for the design of service programmes, focusing on older people from minority ethnic groups, older women and Aborigines. In the fourth part, a number of issues related to policy are explored, including employment, education, housing, retirement incomes, and family support. The final part focuses on various aspects of Australian social policy, including the role of the law in providing a legal framework for policy development, governmental policy units set up to deal with ageing issues, and the Aged Care Reform Strategy.
