Annotation | The authors have written this book as a guide to best practices and policies for the care of older people, which they explore through five themes. First, the ageing of the population is nothing new and is by no means a disaster in the making since, secondly: the older population is healthier and more active socially and economically than many health and social care workers think. Third, the key players are considered in each chapter, and in order of significance are: older people themselves; those who care for them (families and informal carers); social support and social care; community health services; and medical care (screening in general practice, and hospital discharge). Fourth, the most underdeveloped aspects of clinical care for older people are multidisciplinary working and the limited knowledge and skill base in general practice. Finally, resources for development are to be found within the population, both in the efforts of older people themselves and in the funding needed for high quality services. The latest changes in healthcare policy are analysed, including rationing and delivery of care implications. (RH). |
