AnnotationIn Korea, rapid modernisation, which lowered the social and familial status of older Koreans, and population ageing resulted in ageing becoming recognised as a social problem in the late 1960s and early 1970s. At that time, gerontological studies began to attract attention in Korea, and a beginning was made in geriatrics. Over the next 25 years, gerontological studies developed to become a multi-disciplinary and applied science, which is also making contributions to policy formulation in Korea. This paper looks at the emergence of social awareness of the challenges of an ageing population, reviews the historical development of gerontology associations, and considers issues that will shape the future development of gerontology.
