Age - a socially-constructed status?
 — a sociological perspective
Author(s)Susannah Wharton
Journal titleEAGLE Journal, vol 6, no 4, February/March 1998
Pagespp 14-17
KeywordsAgeing process ; Sociology, Social Science ; Philosophy.
AnnotationAlthough old age seems always to have been around as a concept, it is only with the relatively recent increase in the total numbers of older people that it has been seen as a distinct social group. The author suggests that age is deeply embedded in the social structure: it is the way we are measured and defined, organised and categorised, marked, controlled and regulated by society until we die.
