Age - a socially-constructed status? a sociological perspective | Author(s) | Susannah Wharton |
Journal title | EAGLE Journal, vol 6, no 4, February/March 1998 |
Pages | pp 14-17 |
Keywords | Ageing process ; Sociology, Social Science ; Philosophy. |
Annotation | Although old age seems always to have been around as a concept, it is only with the relatively recent increase in the total numbers of older people that it has been seen as a distinct social group. The author suggests that age is deeply embedded in the social structure: it is the way we are measured and defined, organised and categorised, marked, controlled and regulated by society until we die.
