AnnotationLittle research has focused explicitly on older people's own views and experiences in relation to crime. This report presents findings of a short project, which relates what people aged 55 and over think about crime. The research was commissioned by Age Concern Scotland, funded by the Crime Prevention Unit of the Scottish Office, and carried out by the Social Research Unit at System Three. It is based mainly on 14 focus group discussions carried out with older people in different parts of Scotland, using direct quotations from discussions, supplemented by background information from the 1993 Scottish Crime Survey. The report explores: older people's past and present perceptions of crime in relation to broader questions of social change; the impact of crime and insecurity with particular reference to the relationship between older people and teenagers in negotiating public space; and older people's attitudes towards specific crime prevention measures and questions of policing. Recommendations made by Age Concern Scotland include: not treating older people as a homogeneous group; a more visible police presence; and more intergenerational work to bridge the gap between the oldest and youngest sections of the population.
