AnnotationThe author provides a UK perspective, prefaced by his personal experience of family care for an ageing father-in-law, supported by various professionals and volunteers. He considers three areas of concern for himself, not only as a citizen, but also as a gerontologist and policy analyst: first, to examine the changing context of old age and the policy dilemmas it as created; second, to consider how we can assess what we do for the frail; and third, to explore service delivery issues. He suggests that more flexible patterns of working life and retirement should be considered, if those over 65 are to have a better chance of avoiding poverty. We can afford dignity for the oldest old: it is in our interest that those who can afford to contribute more of our collective wealth for services, should do so. (RH).
