AnnotationOver the next 20 years, whilst the rate of population growth is likely to slow, the number of households will continue to rise, with the growth in one-person households responsible for much of the increase. This volumes summarises the main findings of a research project focusing on one-person households in their thirties to fifties, the fastest growing household group. It includes: changing lifestyles and household trends; niche markets; tenure choices and aspirations; importance of location in deciding where to live; and the home environment. Implications for housing policy and practice are considered in relation to meeting housing need, making best use of existing housing stock, catering for older households, conversions, use of brownfield sites, care usage, provision for low income one-person households, and the private rented sector. An appendix describes some stereotypical single person household lifestyle types. A full report of other elements of the research is contained in Volume 2. (RH).
