AnnotationRecent changes within the National Health Service (NHS) have focused upon the move away from traditionally based continuing care institutions to community-based mental health units. In terms of service to older adults, this translates into Community Units (CUs) which offer in-patient facilities, respite and day care and a base for Community Mental Health Teams. In view of these NHS changes, evaluation of current ward functioning is of paramount importance to ensure future quality of service. The aims of this evaluation were: to assess a continuing care ward for people with dementia in terms of its future integration into a CU for older adults; to analyse the present ward functioning, looking at ward environment, staff satisfaction, carers' opinions and residents' well-being; and to forward recommendation for future service provision, highlighting possible areas of development.
