The special problems involved in the diagnosis and treatment of depression in older people in hospital are discussed. The general practitioner (GP) has an essential role in managing depression in older people living at home or in nursing homes, and is the theme of the second article. The final article, on antidepressants, outlines some of the considerations influencing choice of medication when managing depression in physically ill older people. (RH).
