AnnotationLife expectancies are averages. Among the group of people to which the average refers there will be wide variations in the length of their lives. This article quantifies these variations by looking at the chances of an early death, and the chances of an exceptionally long life. It also demonstrates how life tables can be used, in calculating the chances of combination of death or survival of couples. This article also appears in Population Trends, no 92, Summer 1998. (RH).
