AnnotationThe NHS and Community Care Act 1990 requires local authorities to provide information. More recently, the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 provides a right of access to goods and services including information and communication services. The Social Services Inspectorate (SSI) inspected eight social services departments (SSDs) in 1997, to evaluate how far their policies and plans for providing information to the public had progressed since the Policy Studies Institute (PSI) had published their guidelines, `Informing people about social services' in 1993. This inspection focuses on: the range of service information; access to this information; and collaboration between the local authority and other agencies in providing and distributing information. Overall, there were some good initiatives, linked to customer care. However, they often lacked a policy and strategy with appropriate management arrangements. The report cites examples of good practice, and the appendices include advice on information design. (RH).
