AnnotationElderly graduates are individuals with severe functional psychiatric disorders with an onset earlier than 65 years of age who `graduate' into older age. This review addresses the psychiatric problems and needs of the elderly graduates and the services and interventions which are deployed to meet their needs. Literature searches were conducted using Medline, PsychLit and Index Medicus. Key areas identified by the review included cognitive decline, suicide risk, carer stress, institutionalisation and homelessness. The review concluded that the needs of the elderly graduates for psychiatric services are underresearched; this particularly applied to nursing home residents but also the homeless. Questions that require further research have been highlighted. (AKM).
