Older people with schizophrenia: providing services for a neglected group it's the quality of their environment that matters, not where it is | Author(s) | Silvia Rodriguez-Ferrera, Christopher A Vassilas |

Annotation | The 1% of the older population with schizophrenia will have developed the illness before the age of 45. In the past many of these patients have ended up in long stay psychiatric beds. With many psychiatric hospitals now being closed, it is important that older people suffering from schizophrenia are not neglected in the planning of community psychiatric services. The authors cite some studies on transfer from psychiatric hospitals to community homes or the community, and make the point that health and social services need to be aware of the potential to improve quality of life. This can be achieved by providing seamless services, with general practitioners (GPs), specialist mental health services, service purchasers, and other agencies (including psychiatric, social and voluntary services) all having some responsibility.
