Keywords | Voluntary work [elderly] ; Voluntary workers ; National Health Service ; Hospital services. |
Annotation | This article is based on the author's Edith Kahn Memorial Lecture, organised by CSV (Community Service Volunteers). She believes that extending the role of volunteers is critical to the future of the NHS (National Health Service) if it is to continue to survive as a universal service, free at the point of use. Among the the roles she suggests, volunteers could perform a most valuable service by befriending older patients before and after discharge from hospital. (RH). |
