AnnotationComprehensive services for older people with dementia are now widely established. In contrast, services for younger people with dementia - estimated at some 17,000 of the 40-65 age group in the UK - remain underdeveloped. This article identifies current provision of services for younger people with dementia by hospital and community health trusts in England, and examines their attitudes towards specialisation. The majority of services were provided by trusts with existing psychiatric services, in particular old age psychiatry services. Specialisation was uncommon and practised by only 12 trusts. In contrast, 101 trust saw the development of specialist services as `necessary', especially those trusts who had investigated the needs of younger patients with dementia. This survey supports the notion that trusts and purchasers should undertake to assess the needs of younger patients with dementia. The role of specialisation is discussed. (RH).
