Old age psychiatrists: what do they find stressful? | Author(s) | Susan M Benbow, David Jolley |
Journal title | International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, vol 12, no 9, September 1997 |
Pages | pp 879-882 |
Keywords | Psychiatrists ; Stress ; Hours of work ; Social surveys. |
Annotation | A postal survey examined the main sources of stress for 138 practising old age psychiatrists. 5.1 stresses per respondent were identified, falling into seven broad categories: changes within the health service; community care changes; personal; management-related; resource related; related to time pressures; overwork and others. Unavoidable stresses were rarely listed. Most related to work, overload and organisational structure and climate. More research is needed on stress in other areas of psychiatry, ways to minimise or prevent stress, and how to optimise the balance between work and home life. (RH). |
