Annotation | There is a significant and increasing number of people aged 50+ who have been diagnosed as HIV positive or as having AIDS. A survey conducted in 1988 among that age group found those surveyed were more likely to admit knowing nothing about AIDS, and to believe that it could be spread by casual contact, 84% believing that they had no chance of contracting AIDS. This article highlights the attitudes of professionals, the need for early diagnosis, use of services, and the problems likely to be encountered by carers of those with HIV or AIDS. It is increasingly likely that health-care workers will encounter an older person with AIDS or HIV; they need to accept the existence of homosexuality, or to be aware of risk-taking behaviour within the older population.
